A man comes to Nayakkar seeking his help for his son who has been given a “CUP” and hence his future is in jeopardy.( Naalu perukku nallathu nadakunumna Cup vaangarathule thappe illa ? ? ) Skit to open with just a voice over where Velu as a small kid gets his life lesson from his Vappa. He helps all students but at the end could not prevent a “CUP” for his own son ?. Students knock at his door steps to get their college related problems “sorted” out. Velu Nayakkar is a local don in the campus. We didn’t realise that we had stumbled upon the today’s ‘ Lollu Sabha’ format that time ? Sivakumar, Shri Venkatesh, (both E&E) Krishna Kumar (E&I) all pitched in.

Since we decided to base the play on the movie we just had to plug in local issues within the movie template rather than re-invent the wheel. The next few days in the evenings extending to night we sat to write the script.

“What will happen if we have a “Velu Nayakkar” in our campus”? “Why not we do a play developing on this theme for the upcoming Electrotsav?” We immediately agreed that we have latched on to a great idea and we should work on developing the script. It was during one of those evening analysis sessions when I and Govindarajan (E&E) were talking, which provided that “Eureka” moment. As usual like we do to every other movie, this one was also sliced and diced thoroughly in many an evening/night sessions in the hallowed corridors of Annamalainagar. Ergo it was not surprising that this movie touched the hearts of film buffs like us when it was released in 1987 the time we were in the 3 rd year of our Engineering life. I am yet to come across a this generation director who has not been impacted and inspired by the film. Nevertheless it made a mark thanks to its gripping script, appropriate casting, earthy dialogues, measured acting, fantastic songs and background score, path-breaking camera work, close to real Art direction, innovative lighting, make-up, costumes and ofcourse overall direction. Nayagan, helmed by Maniratnam (argubly one of the best film makers in contemporary Indian cinema) had its story line heavily inspired by ‘ Godfather’ and the real life exploits of Varadarajan Mudaliar of the underworld Mumbai.

One pre Nayagan and the other post Nayagan. Observers of Tamil cinema often say that Tamil cinema can be divided into 2 eras.
